Getting a haircut in Miami

by Julian

When I was planning a trip to Miami, I entered the mens hair club page to see if they had a barbershop review in Florida, and they did. There is a place called Carl's Barbershop in a small commercial center close to Miami. They said it was great, old style and specialist in flat tops and short haircuts.

Anyway, I wrote down the directions and as soon as I could, I headed there. When I was getting there, my heart was pumping so hard. I was so afraid, it was the first time I was going to get a haircut outside my country, in English and knowing this barbershop was kind of radical, you know....

Well, I finally arrived and almost didn't have the courage to go in. Yes, it
was an oldstyle place. You could see it from outside. It had the pole and
everything. When I went in, I saw two rows of 5 chairs each, so in total
there were like 10 barbers. Old style red chairs and 3 or 4 customers. A lady asked me if I wanted anyone special or just go for the first available. My answer was...May I use the bathroom please?

In the restroom I saw my quite long hair for the last time and decided to go for it. When I went back, I realized there were something really strange: all the chairs were facing away from the mirror. They were arranged in two rows facing each other, so all you could see when getting your haircut was the other customers getting theirs. At the beginning I thought that as soon  as I sat down the barber would turn the chair to face the mirror, but he didn't.

I went to the first available barber, a fat guy with a very short flat top
and sat down. He then asked me something like "how short do you want it?" I said I wanted tapered short on the sides and back but longer on top. (You know  I like it like that). That was the last time I saw him. He went to his drawer, took the clippers and turned them on. Oh my God, I asked myself what the hell was I doing there.

He started in the back; I could feel the clippers going way up over and
over. Then he did the same thing on each side, There was no hair in my lap so I had no clue how short this guy was leaving it. It was the first time in my whole life I got a haircut without looking myself in the mirror. I concentrate myself in the feeling of the clippers and I started to realize that I felt my head kind of different. It was cooler, It's difficult to explain but I felt, with no doubt, that my hair was shorter than ever.

Finally the clippers went off, I was really worried. There was anything to
do and I didn't know how I was looking!! The nightmare wasn't over. he took a new pair of clippers, smaller ones and turned them on. I couldn't see if he had put any attachments or not. He started to pass them over my back and then over my sideburns. At that moment I thought I had no sideburns left, I was horrorized!!

When the second clipping session was over, he took the scissors and started  to cut on top. I could realize he didn't cut too much because this time some hair was falling on my lap.

When he was done, he put some shaving cream around my ears and back and shaved me there.

Well it was over. I had no idea how I looked. I thought he would then turn
me around. But he didn't!! he took a small mirror and put it in front of me. I
was kind of shocked!! My hair was very, very short on the sides. You could see the scalp!! then he moved a bit the mirror and I saw what was left on my back. It was SHORT!!!. Well I didn't have much time to see myself. He just took off the cape and said you are welcome.

Back in the car I passed my hand over my head, not much hair left on my
head. I realized the damaged when I went back to my hotel and saw the scalp on the back of my head and over my ears.

As you can see, it was a GREAT experience. I died to go back some time and maybe try a real flattop!!

THE END
