Dave's New BaldspotBy Steve
Dave knew he was loosing his hair at 25. He grew it
long, because all the guys in the city were doing the
ponytail thing back in the late 80s. His straight
brown hair just made it past his shoulders. Always in
a smart ponytail, never a hair out of place. When the
shower in his apartment stated to get clogged with
hair, he decided to chop off the ponytail, and get a
flattop.
As the years went by, Dave's hair got shorter and
shorter, until finally he shaved it all off. Mostly
shaved or buzzed, Dave put all his hair growing energy
into a massive beard and big moustache. Of course he
still yearned for long hair.
Finally at 35 he decided enough with shaving, and let
his hair start to grow back. Most people didn't
recognize him. He also noticed that his hair was much
thinner than before. His hairline was receding, and
his crown was thinning. But Dave was determed to
regain the long locks of his 20s. After two years, he
could finally put his hair back in a ponytail.
By his 40th birthday Dave had hair down his back, and
a beard that could rival zz top. He was happy, but
knew that he was steadily going bald. His hairline had
receded and what was left on top was thin and whispy
and barely was long enough to cover his crown. His
crown was also kinda thin, but no real baldspot.
Every morning, before hopping into the shower, Dave
would brush his hair straight down, take out the hand
mirror and check his head. Yes, I am going bald, he
would say to himself. Then he would brush the long,
thin hair around, trying to cover the thinning crown
by brushing his hair straight back. Usually this would
create some kind of combover, but for some reason this
morning, it was just not working. He looked at his
brush, full of hair. He looked at the shower drain,
still more hair.
He took the hand mirror and studied the back of his
head. With his free hand he grasped the hair that made
up his thinning crown. There was so little hair, it
was long, but he was shocked how few strands of hair
were covering the top and back of his hair.
Without really realizing what he was doing, Dave
picked up a pair of barber scissors from the drawer in
front on him, grasped a small, 26 inch, lock of hair
and snipped it off at the scalp. He laid the hair on
the counter in front of him, looked at the refection
in the mirror and was shocked. He now had a baldspot
the size of a quarter on the back of his head. He
gasped. What had he done. But without understanding
why, he repeated the same step with yet another lock
of his long brown hair.
By the time he stopped, Dave had cut all the hair off
his thinning crown. He stopped and looked in the
mirror at the damage he had done. He now had a
saucer-sized bald spot on the back of his head. He
brushed the wispy strands on top of his head back, and
realized he looked rediculous. He started to tear...
how could he go to work looking like this.
He picked up the scissors and slowly worked across the
top of his head. Snipping the wispy strands, and then
brushing them into the sink, he worked until he
reached the bare crown.
When he looked into the mirror, he was shocked. He was
now totally bald. He had the MPB that he saw in the
pictures of his grandfather. Of course grandpa did not
have the huge beard or the 26" fringe.
Dave gathered the remaining hair in a ponytail, but
could not bring himself to cut it. He tied it up, and
then reached into the bottom drawer for a pair of old
clippers. With no guard, Dave buzzed the bald area
down to stubble. Rummaging through the drawer he found
an old razor from his headshaving days.
It was quick work to reduce the thin stubble to a
smooth as glass top. Dave recalled that his head had
never been that smooth when he was shaving all of it.
When he was done, he stroked his beard and surveyed
the damage. This was one seriously bald head. Without
even thinking about it he placed the scissors at the
base of his chin, and was about to cut when he caught
himself. Too much, he thought and put the scissors
down.
Dave pulled back what was left of his hair, and put it
in a ponytail. He looked again in the mirror. With his
hair pulled back, he looked like a much older man with
typical MPB. Well, except for his huge beard.
