There's Your Hair, Do You Want It

By Barber Mike

While we were growing up in the mid to late sixties my Dad gave my two brothers and I our haircuts. We always got regular short boy's haircuts. Then when Spring got anywhere near each year he gave us butch haircuts.

Following one of these particularly short butch cuts Dad removed the makeshift cape, stood me up, brushed me off and pointing to all my hair on the floor said "There's your hair, do you want it?" Well I didn't want it, I was actually glad to have it all cut off!

That year I'd heard my parents talk and it was decided, for some reason, I needed to get a very short haircut. The haircut didn't happen right away so I was left excitedly anticipating it for a week or two. Oh, I wanted it! The conflicts being everyone was surprised that I liked the short hair, and the other boys all had or wanted long hair.

I think when asked the question 'There's your hair, do you want it?' now I would say "No" and "Thank you for cutting it all off".
